Name Giving Ceremonies

Welcoming a new child into your family is a joyous time. For many people this is an opportunity to gather with extended family and friends to think about the changes this child will bring to their lives, all that the future holds and what they wish for that child.

A naming ceremony gives you a way of expressing your love and hopes for this newest family member and inviting all those who care for your child to have a role in his/her life.

It is often the case that two relatives or friends acknowledge their readiness to act as mentors or supporting adults for the child. This role is the same as that of a god-parent and asks that they take a special interest in the child’s life and be a support to the parents.

Other family members and friends can also participate and a ceremony may include poems, readings or music. Sometimes the child will be dressed in clothing that has been made by a friend or has special family or cultural significance. Often guests are asked to write a message of support in a special book for the child to keep or to offer a spoken wish or blessing during the ceremony. For some families planting a tree or giving a special gift is an important part of the occasion.

There are many possibilities open to you when creating a ceremony to welcome your new child into the family and you can be sure that whatever you decide on it will be a very special day.
